Australian PR Points Test: How to Score 85 Points in 2026

Australian PR Points Test: How to Score 85 Points in 2026

Australian PR Points Test: Complete Guide

The minimum score to enter the Australian skilled migration pool is 65 points. The realistic threshold to actually receive an invitation in 2026 is considerably higher — typically 85 points or above for most occupations in competitive states like New South Wales and Victoria.

That 20-point gap between the minimum and the competitive threshold is where most PR applications stall. Understanding what creates that gap, and what you can realistically do to close it, is what this guide is about.

How the Points System Works

The Australian PR points test applies to three skilled migration visas: the Subclass 189 (independent), Subclass 190 (state nominated), and Subclass 491 (regional). You submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect — an online system where you enter your details and claim your points.

The government then conducts regular invitation rounds. In each round, people with the highest points scores in eligible occupations are invited to lodge a formal visa application. You are not guaranteed an invitation just by being in the pool — you need a score high enough to be competitive for your occupation in the current round.

Every Points Category Explained

Age — Up to 30 Points

Age is one of the most significant categories and the only one you cannot change: 25–32 years: 30 points (maximum). 33–39 years: 25 points. 40–44 years: 15 points. 45 and over: 0 points. The system is explicit: it heavily rewards applicants in their mid-20s to early 30s. If you are approaching 33, the urgency of your PR timeline is real and measurable — you lose 5 points on your birthday.

English Language Ability — Up to 20 Points

This is one of the most actionable categories — and one where many people leave points behind. IELTS 8.0 in every band (or equivalent in PTE, TOEFL, or OET): 20 points. IELTS 7.0 in every band: 10 points. The difference between a 7.0 and 8.0 result is 10 points — more than the gap between receiving an invitation this round and waiting another year.

OET Grade B is accepted and many internationally trained health workers find the clinically-focused OET writing and speaking tasks more manageable than IELTS academic tasks. PTE Academic is also widely accepted with equivalent score requirements.

Qualifications — Up to 20 Points

  • Australian PhD: 20 points
  • Australian bachelor's degree, master's, or higher qualification other than PhD: 15 points
  • Australian diploma or trade qualification: 10 points
  • Overseas equivalent qualifications (bachelor's or above): 10 points

The 5-point premium for Australian qualifications over equivalent overseas qualifications rewards study in Australia specifically — which is why completing your master's or trade course in Australia, rather than bringing an overseas qualification for recognition, is strategically beneficial.

Australian Work Experience — Up to 20 Points

Work experience in your nominated skilled occupation while in Australia: 1 year: 5 points. 3 years: 10 points. 5 years: 15 points. 8+ years: 20 points (combined with overseas experience, maximum is 20 points total across both categories). This is why the 485 Graduate Visa period matters so much: every year you work in your skilled field in Australia adds to your points score.

Overseas Work Experience — Up to 15 Points

  • 3 to 5 years in your skilled occupation overseas: 5 points
  • 5 to 8 years: 10 points
  • 8+ years: 15 points

Note that the combined maximum for Australian and overseas work experience is 20 points. An applicant with 8+ years of overseas experience and 5+ years of Australian experience does not score 35 points — they score 20.

State or Territory Nomination — Up to 15 Points

Subclass 190 (state nominated): 5 points. Subclass 491 (regional nomination): 15 points. This is the single largest lever available to most applicants. The 10-point difference between a 190 and a 491 nomination is why many international students deliberately choose to study and work in regional areas. Cities like Adelaide, Geelong, Hobart, Canberra, and Darwin are classified as regional or have active state nomination programs.

Skilled Partner — Up to 10 Points

If your partner has a positive skills assessment in an eligible occupation AND Competent English, you receive 10 additional points. If your partner has Competent English but no skills assessment, you receive 5 points. If you are single or your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you receive 10 points (the system rewards single applicants on the assumption they are not a two-person migration package).

Professional Year — 5 Points

If you completed a formal Professional Year program in IT, accounting, or engineering in Australia in the four years before your invitation, you receive 5 points. Professional Year programs are available for Subclass 485 visa holders.

Community Language — 5 Points

If you are accredited in a language other than English at a community-level standard, you receive 5 points. Accreditation is through NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters). Languages in demand include Mandarin, Hindi, Tamil, Sinhalese, Arabic, and many others.

A Worked Example

Age 27: 30 points. Australian master's degree: 15 points. IELTS 8.0: 20 points. 1 year Australian work experience: 5 points. State nomination (190): 5 points. No partner: 10 points. Total: 85 points.

At 85 points with a nursing or teaching occupation, you are competitive for an invitation in most states in 2026. At 80 points, you may be waiting. At 75 points, you are likely to wait a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many points do you need for Australian PR in 2026?

The technical minimum is 65 points to enter the skilled migration pool. However, in practice, most occupations in 2026 require 85 points or higher to receive an invitation in competitive states. Nursing and Teaching often see invitations at lower points due to critical shortages. The required score fluctuates with invitation rounds.

What gives the most points in the Australian PR system?

The three most impactful categories are Age (up to 30 points — and you cannot change this), English Language (up to 20 points — highly actionable), and Visa Type/Regional Nomination (491 adds 15 points vs 190's 5 points). Combined, these three categories determine whether most applicants are competitive.

Can I improve my PR points after submitting an EOI?

Yes. Your EOI can be updated at any time before you receive an invitation. If you achieve a higher English test result, complete an additional year of Australian work experience, receive a skills assessment, or get nominated by a state or territory, you can update your EOI to reflect your new points total.

Does my partner's occupation affect my PR points score?

Yes. If your partner has a positive skills assessment in an eligible skilled occupation AND Competent English (IELTS 6.0 equivalent), you claim 10 extra points. If they have Competent English only (no assessment), you claim 5 points. If you are unmarried or your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you also receive 10 points — so single applicants are not disadvantaged.

Is the 491 visa better than the 190 visa for Australian PR?

For most applicants, yes — in terms of receiving an invitation faster. The 491 adds 15 points to your EOI score compared to 5 points for the 190. The trade-off is that the 491 requires you to live and work in a regional area for three years before you can apply for the permanent Subclass 191 visa. The 190 is permanent from day one.
